Open HEIC File FAQ

Frequently asked questions about opening HEIC and HEIF files in your browser.

FAQ

What is a HEIC file?

HEIC is an image format commonly used by Apple devices for photos. It can keep good image quality with smaller file sizes, but some apps still do not support it.

Does this upload my image?

No. The tool is designed to decode the selected HEIC or HEIF file in your browser session.

Can I save the image as JPG or PNG?

Yes. After the preview is ready, use the PNG or JPEG download buttons to create a more widely supported copy.

Should I choose JPG or PNG?

Choose JPG for the broadest compatibility with Windows, Android, email, insurance portals, ID uploads, and ordinary photo sharing. Choose PNG when you want a lossless copy for design or documentation.

Does this work without the Windows HEVC extension?

The browser-side decoder is designed to open HEIC files without relying on Windows Photos or the Microsoft HEVC extension. Final compatibility still depends on the browser and the specific HEIC variant.

Why did my file fail to open?

Some HEIC files use variants, metadata, or encodings that a browser-side decoder may not support. Very large files may also be rejected before decoding to keep the page responsive.

Can this repair a corrupted HEIC file?

No. This is a viewer and export helper, not a photo repair tool.
