The file may be valid even when an app rejects it
When a HEIC file will not open, it does not always mean the image is broken. It often means the app, operating system, or upload form does not support the format.
Common reasons HEIC fails
- The device does not have HEIF or HEVC support enabled.
- The app only accepts JPG, PNG, or PDF.
- The upload form checks the file extension before it checks the image.
- The image uses a HEIC variant the viewer cannot decode.
- The file is too large for the destination portal.
What to try first
Open the file in a browser-side HEIC viewer to confirm the image content. If the preview works, download a JPG copy for the widest compatibility. If the destination needs a lossless format, download PNG instead.
When to stop
If multiple local tools cannot decode the same file, the image may be damaged or encoded in a variant that the browser cannot handle. In that case, try opening the original in Apple Photos or exporting it again from the source device.
